Capella

A Capella

Natasha Soto

A Capella is a booklet containing poems and illustrations dedicated to the fixed star Capella. An important star across various cultures throughout history, it’s been known by many names. In the poem, the speaker asks Capella what she makes of all these titles. And, as someone born under the star’s influence, she further asks: how can we embrace the many names, the many stories, that each of us contains?

Weaving historical information and figures, personal experience, and the emotional impact of viewing Capella through a telescope, this work aims to understand Capella through a kaleidoscope of color and meaning. Invoking the speed of the Charioteer Auriga, theconstellation of which Capella is a part, the poem opens with a journey through thousands of years of history at breakneck speed.

Capella, the star depicted as a she-goat, is understood to have a nurturing quality. So this piece is reflective and warm at times, allowing the reader to rest in the questions. Yet, this fixed star is known for its energetic qualities of freedom, self-determination, speed, and fun — which are reflected in the playfulness of the illustrations and the bright colors chosen for the paper and ink.
