Can Monsters Be Loved?

Flavia Mar // BR-UK

Can we love the deepest, hidden spaces of ourselves, the ones we are afraid of, the ones we’ll never fully know?

Menkar invites us to go on a journey to the furthest corners of our beings. To dive into the mouth of the monster head first, to cross into the abyss and recognise we’re not only made of ourselves, but of every living soul around us. It bids us to look at those reflections that we dread to admit are, in fact, part of who we are.

When faced with these fragments of our existence, our first instinct is often to run away. To leash the monster, put it into a cage. To bury it deep down and move on with our days, as if darkness didn’t belong to us. However, the more we try, the more this internal world slips out of our control. It bursts through the smallest cracks, like water carving its path.

And so like water, we need to let it flow. With this artwork, I welcome you to leave your belongings behind and embark on this journey beyond the realms of where you exist. The monster shadow inhabits all of us. When we let go of our outer versions of self, can we love what is inside?
