Procyon

Ritual Artifacts, Tools, Offerings

Emily Sorlien // US

On March 26, I performed a ritual as the Moon culminated with the star Procyon in the constellation Canis Minor. I invited Procyon’s spirit to inhabit an agate necklace engraved with the star’s sigil.

I gave offerings of egg, jerky, wine, candles, and incense. Ritual objects included a marigold-dyed altarcloth, dog statuettes, and a photo of me as a child holding my rooster with my sisters, my dog, and Santa Clause. I wore a marigold-dyed cloak. I recited Andrew B. Watt’s poem to Procyon. The following morning, I left offerings at the summit of Loon Mountain.

I requested Procyon help the talisman bearer live a joyful, daring life. I asked for health, protection against witchcraft, and communion with spirits of the air. In exchange, I offered to make dog statues, print a design on the altarcloth, and send evidence of this pact to Berlin to be displayed at this exhibition.

I asked the star to send me a dream. That night, I dreamed I was at my friend’s farm, awestruck by the lush plants. I applied for a grant for my herbal business. A man asked to see my talisman and said he wanted one for his birthday. There was a dead bald eagle waiting to be plucked and eaten on the table with offerings from my altar.

Prior to the ritual, I hadn’t been sleeping well. Afterwards, my sleep was restored, and I began collaborating on creative projects with a new friend who has Procyon culminating in their birthchart.
